Another Western Australian favourite is Chorizema cordatum, or the Heart-leaf flame pea. Naturally occurring in forests with gravelly or loamy soils, Chorizema cordatum is right at home in a shady to part shade spot. It grows into a scrambling, mounded shrub or around 1 metre high and wide and flowers from late winter with a dazzling display of hot pink and coral coloured flowers.
Best grown in well drained and light soils, it needs to be well mulched and given adequate moisture during dry periods. Beautifully suited to a rockery or shaded retaining wall where it can scramble along. A wonderful understory plant for layering in the garden.
